Procedure in Case of a Lost Key or Password for Encrypted HiDrive Folders

Lost keys and passwords for encrypted HiDrive folders cannot be recovered. However, a backup copy is automatically saved when they are created. In this article, we will show you how to find the backup copy.

Checking the Automatic Key and Password Backup

HiDrive automatically saves a copy of your key and password for your encrypted folders. You must explicitly deactivate this function when creating the encrypted folders if you do not want it to do so.

It should then be possible to find your forgotten key and password in one of these automatically created backup copies on your hard drive.

Guided Steps

  • Open Encryption folder on your Windows desktop.

Please Note

This is the default path where HiDrive automatically creates the key and password for encrypted folders.

Accordingly, if you cannot find anything under this path, you may have changed the path when you created it. If this is the case, repeat the search with the changed path.

What if I still can't find my key and/or password?

For your own data security, 1&1 IONOS does not know your key and password for encrypted HiDrive folders, as these details are only stored locally on your Windows PC and are never transmitted to 1&1 IONOS.

1&1 IONOS is not able to recover these lost keys and passwords.
