Important information for .EU domains affected by a potential Brexit

In the event of a potential withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, existing EU domain names with a registration address in Great Britain or Gibraltar may no longer meet the eligibility criteria. To save your .EU domain in case of a potential Brexit, you have several options.

Your options:

  • Change your Reg-C contact to an EU/EEA resident address.
If you have a valid address in the European Union we recommend you update your domain registrant contact.

  • You can add your EU citizenship to your Reg-C contact details (only possible for individuals)
If you have a citizenship of European Union member country, you can add your citizenship in the domain registrant contact data.
  • Keep your domain by choosing our Partner Service
The Domain Ownership will be transferred to our partner, who, in turn will lease it to you. This means you can continue to use your existing .EU domain (subject to additional terms and conditions). If you decide that you no longer want to use the Partner Service, you can change your domain registrant contact data to a valid address in the European Union at any time. In this case, the ownership will be transferred to the new registrant contact.

As a valued customer we are providing this service for your existing .EU domains at no additional charge.

  • Choose a new domain from our shop
If you can't find your preferred domain, please check the domain offers in our shop.

Note

If you choose to register a new domain, you will have to redirect the traffic from your .EU domain and migrate all your associated services to the new domain.

If you move or cancel a domain, all email addresses set up for this domain will be deleted. E-Mails, which are sent to the deleted email addresses, will not be delivered. After changing the domain, you can change the name of your email addresses. This allows you to continue using an existing mailbox with all emails stored on the server and settings with a different email address.

Please note

If you have already updated the registrant address for your .EU domain to a valid address in the EU then no further action is required.

Important Information, if you choose to register a new domain:

  • If you are using MyWebsite or Website Builder, you will have to assign the new domain to your MyWebsite or Website Builder to be accessible on the Internet.

  • If you are using Managed Cloud Hosting, you will have to assign your new domain to your Managed Cloud Hosting project.

  • If you are using a domain with a server, you will have to change the A-Record of your new domain, so that the server points to your new domain.

  • If you are using your domain with an Online Store, you will have to change the domain connected to your Online Store.

  • If you are using a domain with an external website, you will have to change the connected domain.

What does a Partner Service mean?

To register a .EU domain name, the registry requires that the registrant must meet the General Eligibility Criteria, whereby it must be either: an undertaking or an organisation having its registered office, central administration of business within the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein or a natural person resident within the EU, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. The Partner Service will provide you the means to register/keep your domain by transferring your ownership to our trusted partner.

What does "transferring your ownership" mean?

If you choose the partner service, your domain ownership will be transferred to our trusted partner (with a valid EU address) under a legal framework and you will use the domain without any hindrance by leasing it from them (no extra steps are required from you). In this case our partner will be the rightful owner of the domain and you will be using it as a lessee. If you decide that you no longer want to use the Partner Service, you can change your domain registrant contact data to a valid address in the European Union at any time. In this case, the ownership will be transferred to the new registrant contact.

What impact will it have on my domain?

You will be able to leverage the domain name as it is, only the ownership of the domain will be transferred to our trusted partner with in a legal framework.
