Specifying the e-mail server authentication methods

Servers for incoming and outgoing emails of your iOS email account can support different authentication mechanisms. This articel shows you how to customise these settings.

Supported authentications:

  • Password

  • MD5 Challenge-Response

  • NTLM

  • HTTP MD5 Digest

Server for outgoing e-mails

To set authentication with the outgoing email server:

  • Open Settings  on your iOS device and then tap Passwords & Accounts.
    If you're using iOS 10.3.3 or older, under Settings, tap Mail > Accounts.
  • Select in the data group Accounts the entry you want (Type: Mail).
  • Under IMAP: Account > Server for outgoing mail, select the desired server.
  • Tap Authentication in the detailed view of this server.
  • Select the desired authentication method.
  • Tap on Back. You are now back in the detailed view of the server.
  • Complete your entry with Done .

Server for incoming e-mails

To set authentication with the server for incoming emails:

  • Open Settings  on your iOS device and then tap Passwords & Accounts.
    If you're using iOS 10.3.3 or older, under Settings , tap Mail > Accounts.
  • Select in the data group Accounts the entry you want (Type: Mail).
  • Click IMAP: Account > Advanced.
  • In the Incoming Mail Settings data group, select Authentication.
  • Select the desired authentication method.
  • Tap on Advanced > Account. You are now back in the account overview.
  • Complete your entry with Done .
