For Webhosting and Managed Server packages
In this article, we'll show you how to convert your MySQL 5.5 database to the newer version 5.7.
If you are using a Managed Server package, MySQL 5.7 databases are limited to a size of 1 GB.
- With Managed WordPress or Standard WordPress installations, manually changing the MySQL version is neither possible nor necessary since the database used is managed and automatically updated by IONOS.
- For self-programmed applications or scripts, we recommend that you check whether the SQL code used contains words that have been reserved for internal use since MySQL 5.7 before switching. For more information about reserved words in MySQL 5.7, click here.
- Export your existing MySQL 5.5 database through phpMyAdmin. For help with this step, please see the article Backing Up MySQL Databases with phpMyAdmin.
- Set up a new MySQL 5.7 database.
Import your MySQL 5.5 database backup with phpMyAdmin into the new MySQL 5.7 database. For help with this step, please see the article Restoring MySQL Databases with phpMyAdmin.
Change the MySQL connection in the configuration file of the script, CMS (WordPress, Joomla! ...), web app, or script you are using to the newly created MySQL 5.7 database. For help with this step, please see the article Changing the Database Configuration File of a CMS.
Check whether the script, CMS (WordPress, Joomla! ...), or web app works correctly.
Delete your old MySQL 5.5 database.
