For 1&1 IONOS hosting packages
Learn about FTP and how you can use it with Web Hosting.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and has been developed for transferring files between computers. In web hosting, FTP is typically used for uploading or downloading files to the web space. This means that you can transfer the files required for your website - such as HTML files and images to the web space using an FTP program.
In order to protect your data from access by third parties, the Web Hosting uses the secure FTP variants SFTP (for Linux hosting) and FTPS (for Windows hosting). Unlike normal FTP, the connection is secured using SSL encryption.
Set up secure FTP access in 1&1 IONOS:
Install the FTP program:
Install an FTP program on your computer. The choice of FTP program depends on the operating system you are using. For Windows, Linux or MAC OS you will find a variety of programs on the download pages of e.g. Heise or Chip Online. These usually have a short description, screenshots and recommendations.
Save connection data in the FTP program:
To avoid having to re-enter your data every time, it makes sense to save the connection data in the FTP program.

- For Windows contracts: Save FTPS access data in WinSCP
