Product development at Functions as A Service hackathon

At the two-day hackathon, more than 40 participants worked on seven FaaS projects they had created themselves.

When developing an idea into the first product prototype, hackathons are often really helpful. The IONOS Function as a Service (FaaS) hackathon offered the perfect opportunity to bring together experts from all areas of the company at an early stage, to gain experience with this new technology and to swap knowledge.

Function as a Service technology comes from the area of serverless computing and enables users to run server-side workloads without having to deal with configuration and maintenance of the actual server infrastructure. The actual business logic is provided by the user as code – the hosting platform then executes this event-based in short-lived containers and takes over resource management and scaling fully automatically.

This technology enables developers to implement new ideas quickly and easily and to deploy their code online within a very short time with minimal effort. The advantage for a company like IONOS is that by using the existing infrastructure economically, it can offer an even better and more efficient service that makes optimal use of the available resources.

Two days of sharing expertise

At the two-day hackathon, more than 40 participants from six company locations in three European countries worked on site in Berlin and Bucharest as well as remotely on seven FaaS projects they had created themselves. The focus was on the use of FaaS and the search for clever solutions to the project issues. The aim of the hackathon was to find use cases for FaaS and to develop and test them in the shortest possible time. The basis for this was a new flexible hosting infrastructure, which is also under development.

Soon after the initial presentation, the participants from IONOS and its subsidiaries such as CM4all, we22, Strato and fasthosts started to develop first concepts for the implementation of their project goals. Babak Vahedipour, Max Kellermann and Tobias Weiß from CM4all, who had taken the lead in developing the feature, helped with configuration problems and answering questions about the individual projects. In addition to working on the projects, the participants also had the opportunity to meet colleagues from other locations and learn more about their way of working.

At the end of the hackathon, the groups presented the results of their projects. The two-day event gave the teams the chance to learn from and inspire each other to develop creative solutions, and was a complete success.
