If you own a generic top-level domain (gTLD), this article provides relevant information about the domain expiration notifications that the owner of an IONOS domain will automatically receive from us before/when it expires or is renewed.

Why You Receive Expiration Notifications

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires IONOS as a registrar of generic top-level domains (gTLD) to automatically inform you about the expiration of the registration period of your gTLD at specified times. According to ICANN's requirements, this information must be provided automatically 30 days before the expiration of the registration period.

Domain Expiration Notification Schedule

We will inform you about an upcoming expiration in three phases: 30 days and 7 days before the domain expires or is renewed, we will let you know the expiration date is approaching. When the expiration date is reached, we will let you know what is happening with the domain (e.g. the domain was successfully renewed). The following table shows you when and what kind of notification you will receive.

Domain Expiration Notifications from IONOS

Notes

  • When you register a domain with IONOS, automatic domain renewal is activated by default. If you want to keep the domain and extend the term automatically, you don't need to do anything else. Just continue to use your domain as before. The associated services such as email and webspace will also be kept.
  • Even if you already cancelled your domain, ICANN is obligated to inform you about the expiration of your term at the times mentioned above. If you cancel, your domain will automatically expire on the date already confirmed.
  • If you disable auto-renewal, the domain's term will automatically expire on the date specified. The domain will be automatically deleted from our systems when the cancellation date is reached and will then no longer be accessible. From this point on, there will be no further costs for this domain. The deactivation of the automatic renewal is possible up to 72 hours before the current end of the term.

The corresponding contract will remain active despite the domain cancellation. To cancel the entire contract with all its services, select the entry Cancel entire contract in the Contract Tool.
