The CDN Basic package offers a daily bandwidth limit of 50 gigabytes (GB). To ensure fair and transparent usage, we have implemented a tiered system. This system will notify you when you are approaching or exceeding this limit.
Bandwidth utilisation and bandwidth limit
In the context of content delivery networks (CDN), the bandwidth used refers to the total amount of data transferred from the CDN servers to the visitors of your website. Each element delivered via the CDN, such as images, scripts, or videos, contributes to bandwidth utilisation. This is measured in gigabytes (GB).
For the CDN Basic package, the daily data consumption is set to a bandwidth limit of 50 GB. If this limit is exceeded several times within 30 days, the tiered measures described below will be implemented.
What can you do?
Regardless of the situation, you always have the following options to prevent an exceedance:
- Optimise content: Reduce the amount of data delivered via the CDN by compressing or optimising content such as images or videos.
- Upgrade to CDN Pro: Our CDN Pro package offers you, among other things, unlimited bandwidth utilisation to cover the complete performance requirements of your website.
- Check statistics: In your IONOS account you can find the CDN statistics for your website as well as all other settings at any time.
View bandwidth utilisation in your IONOS account
To check your current and past bandwidth usage directly in your IONOS account:
- Log in to your IONOS account.
- Click on Menu > Hosting in the title bar.
- If you have multiple contracts, select the hosting contract for which you have activated the CDN.
- Click on Manage in the CDN area.
You will now see a graph showing your bandwidth utilisation over the last 30 days.
- Blue line (bandwidth utilisation): Shows the daily amount of data used in GB.
- Red line (bandwidth limit): Marks the daily limit of 50 GB.
- Notes above the chart: Here you will be notified of specific overages and a possible deactivation of the CDN.
What happens when the limit is approached and exceeded?
To give you full transparency and avoid deactivation, the process is divided into several steps. You will be informed of each stage by email.
Advance warning when approaching the limit (over 40 GB)
If your bandwidth usage exceeds 40 GB in one day but is still below the 50 GB limit, you will receive an initial notification by email. We recommend that you take the above measures to avoid exceeding the limit.
First overage of the 50 GB limit
If your bandwidth usage exceeds the 50 GB limit in one day, you will receive an email notification. This overage will be noted for your CDN package. If the limit continues to be exceeded, the CDN service for this web project will be deactivated.
Second overage (last warning)
If you exceed the daily limit of 50 GB on asecond day within a period of 30 days, you will receive a new notification with a final warning. In this email, we will inform you that we will deactivate the CDN service the next time the limit is exceeded.
Deactivation after the third overage
If the daily bandwidth limit of 50 GB is exceeded on three days within a 30-day period, the CDN service for your website will be deactivated.
- What does this mean? Your website will still be accessible as normal, but without CDN optimisation.
- Reactivation: You can reactivate the service manually in your IONOS account. If you upgrade to CDN Pro the service will be automatically and permanently reactivated.
Resetting the counter
If you exceed the daily bandwidth limit only once or twice within a period of 30 days, the overage counter is automatically reset after this period has expired. The count then starts again.
Upgrade to CDN Pro
An upgrade to CDN Pro is possible at any time. This not only removes the bandwidth limit, but also enables extended functions. How to perform the upgrade is described in the following article: Upgrading from CDN Basic to CDN Pro
