If a SEPA direct debit from IONOS cannot be collected, this may result in processing fees or a contract lock. You should therefore keep your payment details up to date and ensure that the invoice amount can be debited. This article provides you with further details on this topic.

Possible reasons for failed payments

To ensure that you can use your IONOS contracts without interruption, IONOS always debits the selected payment method automatically. An automatic debit may fail, for example, if:

  • Your payment details are no longer up to date.
  • Your means of payment does not have sufficient funds.

If an automatic debit has failed and your IONOS invoice has therefore not been paid, your IONOS contract may be locked until payment is received.

Settle outstanding invoice amount

When you log in to your IONOS account, you will see a message with information on why the automatic debit failed, and how to solve this problem. In most cases, IONOS will offer you a direct debit of the outstanding invoice amount.

  • Log in to your IONOS account.
  • In the error message, click on Check payment method and save.
  • Select the desired payment method:
Credit card: The direct debit takes place within a few seconds and your contract will be unlocked a few minutes later.
PayPal: The direct debit takes place within a few seconds and your contract will be unlocked a few minutes later.
SEPA Direct Debit: The collection can take up to 2 days.
  • Click on Save. This will ensure that another attempt is made to collect the outstanding invoice amount.

After you have updated your payment method, we will give you immediate feedback on the status of your payment.
