Implementation of shorter validity periods for IONOS SSL certificates

In order to increase security on the Internet worldwide, browser manufacturers and security authorities are implementing new standards for the validity period of SSL certificates. The aim is to gradually shorten the validity period in order to minimise the potential for misuse.
IONOS is also adapting to these security requirements. From March 10, 2026, the technical validity period for newly issued and renewed certificates will be reduced from one year to 180 days. This article provides answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.
Why is the validity period of SSL changing from 1 year to 6 months?
This is an industry-wide security initiative driven by the CA/Browser Forum and the major browsers (such as Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). A shorter validity period reduces the "attack window" for cybercriminals. If a private key is ever compromised, the stolen certificate will become unusable much faster due to the shorter validity period. By switching to a validity period of 180 days, we ensure that your website complies with the latest global security standards.
Will this increase the price of my SSL subscription?
No. Your billing cycle remains unchanged. If you have a one-year subscription, you will continue to pay annually as usual. The only difference is that the "digital key" (the certificate file) on your server will be updated twice a year instead of once.
I have a Managed SSL/IONOS hosting package. What do I need to do?
Nothing; We have fully automated the backend for Managed SSL, website builders, and standard web hosting customers. Our systems automatically issue and install a new 180-day certificate on your website before the old certificate expires. You can continue to concentrate on your business while we take care of the security measures.
I manage my own servers (root server/Cloud Server). How does this affect me?
If you install certificates manually (unmanaged), you must now replace the certificate files every six months instead of every twelve months.
- Without automation: You must manually download the new certificate twice a year from IONOS account and upload it to your server.
- With automation (recommended): You can use the ACME protocol to allow your server to "communicate" with IONOS. Once set up, your server will automatically request new certificates and install them without you having to do anything.
What is the ACME protocol and how do I use it?
ACME (Automated Certificate Management Environment) is a standard protocol that allows servers to automate the issuance of SSL certificates. We will announce the exact steps as soon as the service is available.
What happens if I forget to renew my unmanaged SSL every 6 months?
If the certificate is not renewed on time, visitors to your website will see a warning message such as "Not secure" (e.g. ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID). This undermines trust and can have a negative impact on your sales. We therefore strongly recommend that you set up ACME automation to avoid this risk completely.
When exactly will this change come into force?
IONOS will issue 180-day certificates for all new orders and renewals from March 10, 2026 . All certificates issued before this date will remain valid until the expiry date of the original term (up to 365 days).
