In many cases, it can be extremely important that emails are forwarded as attachments because only in this way can all of the information - especially the email headers - be forwarded to the desired recipient. For many support requests, it is unavoidable that the transport route of an email via participating servers must be analysed in order to detect forgeries (phishing, spam, or spoofed mails) if necessary.
Below we will show you how to forward an email as an attachment in various email programs and webmail services.
Forwarding with Email Programs as Attachments
Open or select the email to forward. Then select Message > Forward as > Attachment from the menu. In the newly opened window, enter the recipient and, if necessary, change the subject before forwarding the email.
- Outlook 365 and 2010/2013/2016
Double-click the email you want to forward. Then click More > Forward as Attachment at the top of the Reply section. As soon as a new email window has opened, you will see the selected email as an attachment under the item Attached. After you have entered the recipient and chosen a different subject, you can send the mail.
- Apple Mail (on the Mac)
Open the email you want to forward as an attachment. Navigate to E-Mail in the menu and select Forward as attachment.
Forward with Webmail Services as an Attachment
- IONOS WebMail
In the WebMail upper right corner, click the button with the three small horizontal lines and select Edit Settings in the menu that appears. In the next window, click on Email and navigate to the Forward email as option and select Attachment. Once you have left the settings menu, you can send the corresponding email using the Forward button (the forwarding type can then be changed back to Inline.
Optional: Select the email and click on Save as file in the menu with the three small horizontal lines. Select a storage space on your hard drive and then open a new email window in Webmail. Click Attachments and add the previously saved file. The email can then be completed and sent with the recipient and a subject.
Open the email and right-click the drop-down menu (down arrow next to the date and the reply button). In the next selection, choose Display original. This will open another window with detailed information about the original message. Click on the link Download original message and save the file on your hard drive. Then open a new email window in Gmail, navigate to the paper clip icon ("Attach file") in the bottom menu bar and insert the downloaded attachment. The email can then be completed and sent with a recipient and a subject.
Tip: The downloaded file will be saved in *.txt format. You can rename them to *.eml format using the File Explorer (or File Manager). You can ignore a corresponding warning at this point.
- Outlook Web App
In the message list, select the email you want to forward, then click New email and simply drag the email you want to forward into the editing window. You will now see the file as an attachment in the new email window.
With some email programs and many webmail services, emails cannot be forwarded as attachments at all - or only with some extra effort involved. In this case, you must locate the required data (for example, header lines) using other options in the program you are using and then copy it.

On smartphones, you may be looking in vain for features that allow you to display complete headers or forward emails as attachments. We therefore recommend using a computer or notebook for the above steps.
