IMAP, POP3, what is it?

IMAP and POP3 are methods of receiving email. When setting up your email program, you can choose between IMAP and POP3. We recommend IMAP as the account type for your inbox. Apply the settings from the IMAP column. Learn more about POP3 and IMAP here.

Using the Alternative SMTP Port 587

If your email program cannot connect to the outgoing mail server even though all the details are correct, it may be that access to port 465 is blocked on your network. If this is the case, IONOS offers the alternative port 587.

How to change your email program to port 587:

  • Start your email program.
  • Go to the outgoing mail server settings.
  • Change the port settings from 465 to 587.
  • Adjust the encryption method:

Thunderbird: Change the encryption setting from SSL/TLS to STARTTLS.

Outlook 2016/2019: Change the SMTP connection type to TLS.

Outlook (Microsoft Office 365): Change the SMTP connection type to STARTTLS.

Gmail App: Change the encryption setting from SSL/TLS to STARTTLS.

Please Note

For Outlook 2016/2019, you need to change the setting from SSL to TLS.
