In this article, you will find important information about securing your email. This option is free for you to use, easy to apply, and doesn't affect how your IONOS email account is used or how it performs in any way.
In order to benefit from secure email using SSL encryption, you will need to change the settings in the email program(s) used to manage your email. Also, these settings changes are typically completed quickly (less than 5 minutes).
Why did I receive another email about this even though I have already converted?
Please make sure all devices/programs where you have set up the email address use the encryption settings.
Examples of this include:
- Smartphones or Tablets
- Email clients (Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.)
If this is the case, there may simply have been an overlooked setting during the changeover. If you have already made the change for all devices and programs, you can ignore our email. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Do the recipients of my emails have to pay attention when I switch to secure email traffic?
No. The change does not affect how your sent emails appear or how they must be received.
You only use the WebMail and not a separate email program?
IONOS WebMail is used exclusively through Internet browsers and already offers protection with HTTPS encryption. No settings need to be changed/applied for secure email in WebMail.
You receive an Internet security warning in Microsoft Outlook 2007/2010 with references to an invalid security certificate or incorrect principal name.
Please make sure that you have entered the following server names in the settings of your email program:
- Incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP):
For IMAP: imap.ionos.com
For POP3: pop.ionos.com
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.ionos.com

You had someone else set up your email program.
If you use the email address, such as with an employee in a company, but you do not manage it yourself technically, forward the email and the link to this page to your IT administrator/specialist.
