If you do not recognise the email address listed under Return-Path in the email header, this email may have been forwarded to your address via another IONOS mailbox.
When a IONOS mailbox forwards an email, the IONOS mail system inserts an encoded entry into the Return-Path field in accordance with the Sender Rewriting Scheme (SRS):
- The SRS ensures, by means of an entry in the email header, that the original sender of a forwarded email remains identifiable. This allows undeliverable messages to be sent back to the original sender.
- The entry is generated according to the following pattern: SRS0=HHH=TT=hostname=local-part@domain, where HHH stands for a hash and TT for a timestamp.
In the following example, the email was originally sent from the address john.doe@gmail.com:
