Restoring MySQL and MariaDB databases with phpMyAdmin
Please use the “Print” function at the bottom of the page to create a PDF.
Valid for: Web Hosting and Managed Dedicated Servers
This article shows you how to restore your database from a backup in IONOS phpMyAdmin.
Requirement
The backup is available as a file in SQL format.
Please Note
Databases larger than 1 GB (gigabyte) must be backed up and restored using SSH access. Otherwise, the process fails because the script is cancelled due to a timeout.
For instructions on backing up and restoring a database using SSH, see the article Backing up and restoring MySQL and MariaDB databases using SSH.
Restoring the database
Open the database you want in IONOS phpMyAdmin. For instructions, see the article Opening phpMyAdmin.
Click Import in the menu bar.
The import settings page is displayed.
In the File to import section, click Choose File and select your backup file.
Specify the import settings you want:
The default Character set of the file is utf-8. As almost every current application supports this format, you probably do not need to change anything here.
The Format must match the format of your backup file. The default setting is SQL.
You can usually leave the other settings as they are.
Click Go to start the import.
Your data and table structure are now restored from the backup.
Fixing restore errors
The following sections describe common errors that can occur when restoring a database, together with suggested solutions.
MySQL error #1044
If the data import fails with a message such as #1044 - Access denied for user 'dboxxxxxxxx'@'%' to database 'dbxxxxxxxx', follow the steps in the article "1044 - Access Denied" Error when Importing a MySQL/MariaDB Database.
MySQL error #1046
If you receive the error message #1046 - No database selected when importing data, click the database name in the navigation panel on the left in phpMyAdmin. Your database is now selected, and its name is also shown at the top of the page after the server name. Then repeat the import. It should now work.
Timeout error
If a timeout error occurs repeatedly when importing large amounts of data, we recommend restoring the data using your SSH access. For instructions, see the article Backing up and restoring MySQL and MariaDB databases using SSH.
Additional information
IONOS automatically creates daily backups of your MySQL and MariaDB databases. To reset a database to an earlier state without your own backup file, or to have a deleted database restored, see the following article:
