In this article, we'll show you how to create a Cloud Server.

Simply follow these steps:


You are in the area Infrastructure > Server section of the Cloud Panel.

  • Click the down arrow next to the Create button.

  • Click on Cloud Server.

  • Enter the desired server name.

  • Select the desired data center.

Additional Information

  • The shorter the geographical distance between the servers and your users or visitors, the shorter the loading times. In order to optimize the loading time, it is recommended that you select a IONOS data center that is as close as possible to your users and/or visitors.

  • The following resources must be set up separately for each data center:
    Shared Storages
    Load Balancers
    Private Networks

  • Firewall and monitoring policies can be assigned to all servers regardless of the selected IONOS data center.

  • Select the desired configuration for the server:

    Fixed Configuration: You can choose between several fixed configurations.

    Flexible Configuration: Click on the package and then configure the server using the sliders or the buttons.

  • Servers with a fixed configuration are offered at a discounted price.

  • If you switch off a server with a fixed configuration, the fees shown still apply.

  • Once the server has been created, the size of the hard disk cannot be reduced.

  • When you create a server with a flexible configuration, the usage of storage space, RAM, and CPU is calculated to the minute.

  • If you turn off a server with a flexible configuration, no fees will be charged for the following resources:
    Main IP
    Pay-per-Use software licenses
  • The fees for resources whose consumption is always fixed are charged to you regardless of their use. Examples: SSDs and additional IP addresses
  • Optional: Assign a Block Storage.

  • In the Images area, select the operating system for the server.

Image Description
IONOS Images These IONOS-validated images contain the complete operating system.
Applications These images contain certain, preinstalled software. As soon as the server has been created, you can use this software.
ISO These images correspond to the original installation DVDs of Windows and Linux. Once the server is up and running, you must start the KVM console and install the operating system on the server. For operating systems with more than one installation DVD, the first one must be started first. You can change the DVDs under the menu item DVD drive.
My Images To display the My Images tab, you must create at least one image from an existing server. This must be located in the same IONOSdata center. If you use your own image to create a new server, it clones the original server. The access data to the newly installed server are identical to those of the original server.

Please Note

  • Your own images can only be used in the IONOS data center in which they were created. If you want to use your own images in different data centers to create new servers, you must create at least 1 image in each IONOS data center.

  • ISO images do not contain license keys. Depending on the selected operating system, it may be necessary to enter a license key. This must be provided by you if necessary.

  • Optional: Select the desired additional software.

    • SQL Server: If you have selected the Microsoft Windows operating system, you can optionally install SQL Server. SQL Server is a relational database management and analysis system from Microsoft.

    • To create backups from this server, enable the Install Backup Agent option. The Backup Agent is software that is needed to create backups of your servers. Backups are managed from the Backup Console. These can be accessed in the Backup > Backup Package area.

  • In the Advanced Options section, click Show.

  • In the Password field, enter and repeat the password for accessing the server.

  • Optional: In the SSH Key field, select one or more public keys. Alternatively, you can import a new SSH key.

Additional Information

Public key authentication is an authentication method that allows you to log on securely without a password. This method uses a private and a public key for user authentication. The public key must be stored in the Cloud Panel for key authentication to be set up on the server. The public key is automatically entered in the file root/.ssh/authorized_keys. The private key is stored locally on your computer and can also be protected with a password.

  • Optional: To configure your server individually after creation, insert the desired post-creation script in the User Data field.

The script is processed and executed by cloud-init after the creation of the server. This free software can execute the following scripts:


  • Cloud Config

  • Shell Scripts

  • Text only

Microsoft Windows:

  • Powershell Scripts

  • Command Line Scripts

  • Text only

  • In the Distribution of Processors and Cores area, choose the desired distribution of processors and cores.

Please Note

  • Check the system requirements of the operating system and the software to be installed before determining the distribution of processors and cores.

  • Before determining the distribution of processors and cores, check whether the software you are installing is licensed on a per-user or per-core basis.

  • In the Firewall policy list, select a firewall policy.

  • In the Public IP list, specify whether you want to assign an existing or a new public IP to the server.

  • Specify whether to add the server to a private network.

  • Click Create.

The server will be created.
