In this article, you will learn how to restore your backups created with MyDefender to a Mac.

Notes
  • Starting with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, certain system files/folders/processes are marked with the extended file attribute 'com.apple.rootless'. They are specially protected in this way. These include, for example, pre-installed applications and most folders in /system, /bin, /sbin,/usr. This system integrity protection feature is also called SIP (System Integrity Protection). Files and folders that are protected by SIP cannot be overwritten when restoring a backup if the restore is performed under the operating system itself. To restore these protected files, you must perform the restore using boot media.

  • Starting with macOS Sierra 10.12, rarely used files can be moved to the cloud using the Save to iCloud feature. Small 'footprints' of these files are stored in the file system. During a backup, these data footprints are then backed up instead of the original files. When you restore such a data footprint to its original location, it will be synced with iCloud and the original file will be available again. If you restore a data footprint to another location, synchronization is not possible and the original file is not available.

Creating a Boot Medium

Boot media is removable media, such as a USB flash drive, that allows you to run the Cyber Protection Agent without the actual operating system. You can use bootable media to restore an operating system if it fails to boot, for example.

Create a boot medium and test it after you create the first drive-level backup. Repeat this process after each major update to Cyber Protection Agent.

To create boot media on macOS, follow the steps below.

Requirements
  • Open the Launchpad.

  • Enter Rescue Media Builder.

  • Start the Rescue Media Builder by double-clicking it.

  • Enter the user name and password of the administrator account and click OK.

The software displays the connected removable drives/media.

  • Select the media you want to make bootable.

Caution

If you make the medium bootable, all data on this medium will be deleted!

  • Click Create.

The boot media is created. This may take a few minutes.
